Sound effects are part of the secret sauce of captivating content—but what if you could cook up your own, instantly? I dove into Eleven Labs new AI sound effects generator to see if it’s all hype or the real deal.

Not too long ago, ElevenLabs teamed up with Shutterstock (the big online content library) to introduce their AI sound effects generator. Naturally, I had to check out this cool new tool.
After playing around with ElevenLabs’ text-to-sound effects feature, I found it works really well and has tons of potential applications. I can totally see people and companies in the entertainment industry using this to spice up their content—and some already are.
Now, the free plan lets you start generating sound effects right away, but you can’t use them for commercial purposes unless you subscribe to a paid plan. But hey, that’s not a bad deal since the starter plan gives you access to this feature and more for just $5 a month.
What I liked
The generated sound effects have high audio quality. I was genuinely amazed at the audio quality and how close the sound effects were to real-life sounds. Most sounded organic, like they recorded the real thing, making them suitable for commercial use.
It's easy to use and has helpful adjustment features. Getting started is super easy thanks to the well-designed interface. It might be simple in terms of editing features, but it makes good sound effects—which is what people will mainly use it for. With the prompt influence setting, you can fine-tune your audio to match your prompts closely. It also lets you adjust the duration of the output.
It gets you results in an instant. Generating sound effects took no more than a minute in the multiple tests I did. That’s fast, considering the high quality of the results. Speed might not be crucial for everyone, but it makes a big difference if you’re regularly putting out content with sound effects.
What I didn’t like
There’s no support for other audio formats besides mp3. There’s no support for other audio formats besides MP3. It would be great if ElevenLabs added support for more high-quality audio formats, but for now, we just have to settle for MP3 exports.
Occasionally, the sound effects didn’t adhere to the prompt. In some cases, I had to tweak my prompts and settings to get the right generation, but a few times it just didn’t come close to what I had in mind. Getting detailed and highly descriptive in your prompts is really useful for the best results.
