ChatGPT Plugins are being replaced by GPTs 🤖

This page is dedicated to ChatGPT plugins, a beta feature for ChatGPT Plus users which was the main way to connect ChatGPT to external apps from its launch in March 2023, until the feature was succeeded by the introduction of GPTs in November the same year.

I'm keeping this particular page around for reference, and for GPT creators to check what has already been created, and get inspiration for new and improved concepts.

How Do I Access ChatGPT Plugins? 🔌

First off, you will need a ChatGPT Plus subscription (totally worth it).

Then, inside ChatGPT, click the 3 dots next to your e-mail in the bottom left corner and select Settings. Go to Beta Features and enable Plugins from there.

To use GPT plugins inside the chat interface, hover over the GPT-4 tab and select Plugins. You will then be able to access the Plugin store, where you can install the plugins you want.

Use whatplugin, the most organized ChatGPT plugin list, to help guide you to the right ChatGPT plugin for your specific use-case.

How Do You Choose Which ChatGPT Plugins to Include, and How Are They Ranked? 🕵🏻

I include every published ChatGPT plugin that is accessible through the OpenAI Plugin store on this site, to ensure you have a complete ChatGPT plugin list.

If you find a plugin that's not in the list, but should be – please let me know

When it comes to the rankings, these are currently only based on your likes and updated periodically. As a user, don’t hesitate to give the plugins you find useful a “like” – it is extremely helpful to the community as it brings the most helpful ones to the top of the list, and also helps boost the value of this site as a tool for plugin exploration.

Any intent to manipulate the ranking system by plugin developers to boost any particular plugin's visibility will not be tolerated.

If you want to see the plugins which are most popular based on their actual usage, head over to the Popular page. The plugins in this list are the ones OpenAI themselves are labelling as popular inside the ChatGPT plugin store.

If you’re curious, check out my list of plugins I use every day, with real-life examples (you get free access to this article when you sign up to my newsletter).

How Do I Stay Safe While Using ChatGPT and Plugins? 🥽

Here are my tips to staying safe while using ChatGPT plugins. Make sure you read through these before starting to explore and use plugins for ChatGPT.

‍-      As with all use of ChatGPT and other AI chatbots, always be careful with the information you share. Never share sensitive information you wouldn’t want others to see.

-      The use of ChatGPT and ChatGPT plugins is 100% at your own risk. The function of this site is listing the publicly available plugins in the ChatGPT plugin store; I don’t verify or evaluate security risks associated with any plugins.

-      Many plugins are connected to third-party applications, and while most have some kind of free option, some require or offer a paid subscription.

-      While there are many awesome plugins out there, beware that the plugin store is also relatively crowded with low-quality plugins that could be unhelpful, buggy, misleading, etc.

-      Some information on this site might be inaccurate or outdated, thus I recommend checking the plugin store directly if you want to ensure the details of the plugins are accurate and up to date.

-      Be extra careful when clicking on external links in the chat, as these direct to websites which could theoretically execute what’s known as a prompt injection. I’ve linked an article below if you’re interested in the subject.

According to OpenAI, «Plugins are tools designed specifically for language models with safety as a core principle». OpenAI has some security measures in place, but there have been numerous sources highlighting several weaknesses with the security of the plugin ecosystem, and encourages users to be extra cautious with their use.

If you are interested to learn more about this topic, I recommend reading the following articles:

-      Wired's article on the security risks of ChatGPT plugins.

-      @wunderwuzzi23’s article on how GPT Plugins might be exploited, posing security risks to users.

If you have questions about any of the plugins, please get in touch either with OpenAI or the developer behind the plugin directly. For the latter, you can find the contact e-mail of the developer and a link to their website in each plugin’s page here on whatplugin under “developer info”.

Understanding ChatGPT Plugin Terminologies 🧐

Frequently, I come across various terms, spellings and yes, misspellings, related to ChatGPT plugins. This section is designed to clarify any confusions:

Q: Is there a difference between "Chat GPT4 plugins" and "ChatGPT 4 plugins"?
A: No, they refer to the same kind of plugins. The latter would be more appropriate since ChatGPT is one word. However, it’s just a different way some users search for them.

Q: I've seen "Chat GPT plugins" and "ChatGPT plugins" used interchangeably. Which one is correct?
A: Both refer to the same thing. Again, the latter spelling would probably be most appropriate as ChatGPT is a single word. In the end, it’s just a matter of spacing preference.

Q: "GPT plugin" and "Plugin chat GPT" seem different. Do they mean different things?
A: Not at all! They both refer to the same plugins developed for ChatGPT. The difference is merely in the order and format of words.

Q: "Plugins ChatGPT" and "ChatGPT 4 plugins" – are they the same?
A: Yes, they are! One is simply a reversed form of the other. "ChatGPT 4 plugins" specifies that the plugins are designed for the fourth version of ChatGPT, which is currently also the only version that supports plugins.
