Howdy, wizards.

If you’ve been fiddling with Claude Artifacts lately, don’t miss the new tutorial from Replit on how to deploy these apps anywhere (summary below).

The most important news stories in AI this week

Procreate taking a stance against GenAI. Procreate makes editing apps for designers and artists, and recently took to Twitter to announce that they won't be implementing GenAI in their products, period. They're taking the stance that creativity is made, not generated.

‎ Why it matters‎ ‎ In the short term this seems like a brilliant PR move; the tweet has nearly 10M views and tons of news outlets have covered the somewhat controversial stance on not embracing AI. Procreate's positioning is likely to resonate with a market of purists that reject using AI for their work altogether.

However, while AI art today has a tendency to feel a bit phoney, we're likely to get more refined and tasteful ways to apply generative AI that'll improve both quality and speed of artists' work. In that sense, taking a rigid anti-position like this might backfire.

A survey on 100,000 workers about ChatGPT adoption across occupations. A collaborative study between the University of Chicago and Statistics Denmark surveyed 100,000 Danish workers about their ChatGPT usage.
About 15% of all journalists, marketers and software developers had active ChatGPT Plus subscriptions. Demographically there's also notable gaps in AI adoption; more men reported using ChatGPT vs women, and more younger people were using it than older (surprise, surprise). Keep in mind, this was done between November 2023 - January 2024, so usage is expected to have increased substantially across the board since then.

‎ Why it matters‎ ‎ AI adoption is happening incredibly fast, but there's notable differences in the population about who is using it at this point. I do share many people's safety concerns related to the speed at which things are happening in AI, but I also think Big Tech pushing "AI to everyone" might bring something good: it'll familiarise more people with it, and might democratize its use a bit more. After all, it's likely that late adopters could face a disadvantage to everyone that's already boosting their productivity using AI.

Build and deploy Claude Artifacts on Replit. Claude Artifacts are a great way to build little apps with Claude using plain English, but sharing is limited to the Claude interface. However, this 20-minute shows you that moving your Artifacts off of Claude and onto the internet, or even just locally on your machine, isn't that difficult.

‎ Why it matters‎ ‎ ‎ AI is making building apps easier, and platforms like Replit is making it easier to distribute them. Let's be clear, this isn't a drag-and-drop solution to hosting your Claude Artifacts; if you're not a coder, it it could take you a bit of trial and error until you get the development environment set up on Replit; however, with some willingness to learn, a lot of people can do it. And once you've reached the point of having the first version of the app set up on Replit, it's easy to go back to Claude and ask it to change stuff, and improve your creation.
